Aggressive Cystic and Cavitary Appearances in Lung Adenocarcinoma

چکیده
A 65-year-old woman visited our department due to the presence of a dry cough. On auscultation, crackles were heard predominantly in both lung bases. Chest radiography showed bilateral nodular opacities (Picture 1). Chest computed tomography showed nodules, cysts, pseudocavitations (arrowheads), and masses with cavities (Picture 2). Although septic emboli, tuberculosis, fungal infection, and cystic pulmonary metastasis were considered, transbronchial lung biopsy showed tumor cells proliferating in a glandular fashion with foci of fibroblastic proliferation and a lepidic pattern, which was consistent with lepidic adenocarcinoma (Picture 3). Pulmonary metastasis was excluded based on the findings from positron emission tomography scanning and other imaging procedures. Generally, cysts and/or cavitation in lung cancer are caused by several mechanisms, such as a check-valve obstruction, necrosis, or disruption of the alveolar wall by a tumor (1). Although cysts and cavitation are rarely observed in lung adenocarcinoma, their aggressive

Ominous lung cavity “Tambourine sign”
Mucinous adenocarcinoma represents a rare subtype of adenocarcinoma of the lung, which is frequently invasive and has a poorer prognosis. Of its wide range of imaging appearances, air-space consolidation is the most frequent pattern while cavitary form has only rarely been reported. Despite imaging advancements, the differentiation of benign and malignant cavitary lung lesions sometimes remains...
متن کاملPathologic Review of Cystic and Cavitary Lung Diseases
Pulmonary cystic and cavitary lesions caused by diverse etiologies are commonly encountered in chest imaging. The terms "cyst" and "cavity" are used to describe air-filled regions in the center of a nodule or consolidation of the lung. To date, only radiologic aspects of these lesions have been addressed. The morphologies of pulmonary cystic and cavitary lesions exhibit a broad spectrum, rangin...
متن کاملImaging Findings of Focal and Multiple Cystic and Cavitary Lung Lesions
Cystic and cavitary lung lesions constitute a spectrum of pulmonary diseases diagnosed in both children and adults. Cysts and cavities are commonly encountered abnormalies on chest radiography and chest computed tomography. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest frequently helps define morphologic features that may serve as important clues regarding the nature of cystic and cav...
متن کاملA rare case of cavitary lung cancer complicated with mycotic pneumonia and bullous emphysema
RATIONALE The accurate diagnosis and staging of cavitary lung cancer is challenging but essential for the choice of therapy; therefore, the differential diagnosis of cystic pulmonary lesions needs to be elucidated. PATIENT CONCERNS A patient was admitted with multifocal thin-walled cystic lesions in chest computed tomography. DIAGNOSES The patient had been diagnosed as heterogeneous bullous...
متن کاملCavitary Lung Cancer Lined with Normal Bronchial Epithelium and Cancer Cells
Reports of cavitary lung cancer are not uncommon, and the cavity generally contains either dilated bronchi or cancer cells. Recently, we encountered a surgical case of cavitary lung cancer whose cavity tended to enlarge during long-term follow-up, and was found to be lined with normal bronchial epithelium and adenocarcinoma cells.
